Chasing the Lotus – The Movie

Chasing the Lotus – The Movie

For forty years, underground filmmakers Greg Weaver
and Spyder Wills documented surf discovery as it
migrated around the globe. Their shots captured on
celluloid became the timeless images for such films as
The Forgotten Island of Santosha, Big Wednesday,
Pacific Vibrations, Uluwatu and many more.

chasinf-1.jpg

Chasing the Lotus is a cinematic journey inspired by many of the
reels that were lost in the making of these films.
Since that time, these reels have resurfaced and have now been

brought to light. A fusion of rare super 8mm film,
photo stills and contemporary interviews blend
together to make Chasing the Lotus the most in-depth
look at surfing discovery ever made.

Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence

Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence

Laguna Art Museum
Laguna Beach California
June 24 to September 30, 2007

For those in the area ….. this already has the buzz as the finest and largest showing of original Rick Griffin art, ever.

Rick Griffin (1944-1991) was a renowned “surfer artist” when he arrived in San Francisco in 1966 just in time to earn a poster commission for the Human Be-In. Creating a simple, yet powerful design for that event, he quickly made a name for himself with his brilliant lettering, use of nineteenth century graphics, humorous approach to advertising motifs, and breathtaking color combinations.

Rick’s most famous designs include “Flying Eyeball”, “Aoxomoxoa”, and “Heart and Torch”. Rick Griffin’s style reached maturity in the richly colored psychedelic dance posters he designed for Bill Graham’s Fillmore and Chet Helm’s Family Dog rock concerts. There has never been a museum exhibition of Rick Griffin’s work. The exhibit would include a survey of Griffin’s work spanning thirty years from the 1960s until his death in 1991. Curated by Laguna Art Museum chief curator, Tyler Stallings. Accompanied by a catalogue.

The Jack McCoy DVD Collection

Four Surfing Classics Now Available

Green Iguana,

Bunyip Dreaming

Sons Of Fun

The Sik Joy

These surfing videos are true classics re-released in a special edition four pack DVD box set. Days and days of flat day viewing featuring all your favourites, Occy, Munga, Luke Egan and the emerging young talents of Donovan, Margo and Shane Dorian.

When McCoy was rolling precious film on these boys during the mid nineties, times were different and movie deadlines were dictated by time spent in the pit, not the labour of following phantom Internet swells around the globe. Billabong and Jack McCoy present Free As a Dog. Now Available at California Surf Co.

We really like Free As A DogFree as a Dog. this just arrived at California surf Co. and we higly reccomend it. Jack McCoy does a great job of showcasing Joel Parkinson’s surfing and there is beautiful footage of Australia.

Billabong says “Free As a Dog is a film staring Joel “Parko” Parkinson and his faithful hound, Trey. As seen through the eyes of the ever-loyal Trey, who is also the film’s narrator, the remarkable surfing talent of Joel Parkinson is showcased like never before. The film starts on Joel’s home turf of Coolangatta, the Queensland Australian surf town with a glorious surfing past. It’s also the home of what is affectionately known as “The Superbank”, a man-made perfect stretch of beach that creates perfect, long, peeling waves. Obviously Parko is one of the top dogs here and we get a really good look at his incredible surfingat this amazing spot.Parko and Trey then set off on a mission to help get a couple of groms (played by James “Woody” Wood and Ellis Erickson) back in line after they’ve gone off the rails in classic teenage puppy-love mode, fantasising about a beautiful dark-haired beauty (played by Ashley Cheadle). While Parko and Trey try to sort out these two infatuated young lads, we go surfing with them to several great spots. Parko shines like only he can on these outstanding breaks, a few of which have never been filmed before.Parko winds up the movie by telling the lads that the best way to sort out their problems is to confront the girl, confess their so-called loves for her, then get their minds back onto their surfing. As a proud new husband and father—and one of the world’s top pro surfers—Parko knows only too well that, sooner or later, every dog has his day.

Free as a Dog—A True Dog’s Tale is the 24th film in a long line of classic surfing films by Jack McCoy. After the World Premiere on January 2nd, 2006, at Sydney’s State Theatre, Free as a Dog will travel internationally with the Billabong Jack McCoy Surf Film Festival until August 2006.
